Accessories for the most part are for adding beauty and do not fulfill any purpose except that of beauty. Of course, some accessories like throw pillows might add some function of comfort but do we put throw pillows on the sofa for that purpose? Is that the real function? Usually not.  It’s to add beauty. It dresses up and elevates the finish of any space.

The trick to finishing touches is to add accessories so that they match the mood of the room and are in harmony with all other elements. The possibilities for accessories are as great as your imagination can take you. The object can be anything – a milk container, a seashell, old prints, magazine covers. I think you get my drift.

Below are a couple of tips:

Tabletop Accessories:

Start with the major objects. For example, the larger objects. Place them on the table and move them around until you achieve an arrangement that you find pleasing. Then, stand back and see if any blank areas appear stark and where can you add any small objects that will make the table look even more interesting.

Corners:

To soften corners of the room plants are a time-honored method. Consider a tall floor-standing potted plant or a smaller plant atop a table corner. You can consider sculptures, lamps, or larger vases

Shelving:

You’ll want to add knick-knacks that can be sentimental or flare to the space. Take a look at the example I did in my top kitchen cabinets to fill up the space and add character. Be sure to harmonize in colors so that the space makes sense with the overall mood of the space.
