CRISTINA ROSE 0:05

Hey friends, welcome to this week’s episode of “Not Your Momma’s Podcast”. And today’s guest is ‘Casey Weiss’. She is a “holistic nutritionist and a life coach”. And we are so excited to have her on the episode today. Casey, welcome to the show. It’s such an honor to have you on. Can you introduce yourself a little bit more to our audience today?

CASEY WEISS 0:24

Definitely. Thank you so much for having me. Thanks for that intro. So, I am Casey, I’m a certified holistic nutritionist. And I came into this space after having years of my own struggle, years of eating issues, I will say and going from mat to yo yo dieting for years and truly feeling at war with body with food. And it wasn’t until I was able to find peace, to heal my relationship with food and my body that finally everything really quick for me, it was when I started to stress less about foods that I was able to shed the excess weight and become my healthiest self.

CRISTINA ROSE 1:05

Totally. And that’s what we love to talk about here on the podcast is not only like physical health, but mental health is so important because that’s what’s gonna keep you going and have that ambition and the strength to reach your goals. Because if you have that weak mindset, you’re gonna give up on yourself. And it’s very important that we encourage a great mental mindset. And so with you what is the all or nothing mentality? And how does that affect our health?

CASEY WEISS 1:34

Oh, Love this okay, so basically, this is all or nothing mentality is what truly plagued me for 10 years. So this idea that you have to do it all, or it’s nothing or it’s not worth it. And I have a lot of clients coming to me that are self proclaimed type a perfectionist and wear it like a badge of honor. And a lot of us women have been conditioned to think that this is something that we should aim and strive for. We see this diet, we hear about this girlfriend who’s had these amazing results. And so we want to dye them and we get this dopamine rush, we’ve all been there like you may not want them it we’ve all been there. We’ve gone into like crazy crashed, right. And every day we’re waking up in the morning, we’re weighing ourselves and we’re seeing that, like, half a pound go down. I mean, it’s generally water weight, or whatever it is, but something crazy. And we’re like, oh my god, it’s working. It’s working. And it’s and we get this like Rush. And it’s crazy. Like we almost like this crazed feeling, guess what? It’s not sustainable. And it’s sure as hell is not healthy. And so we’re putting ourselves in these extremes.

CRISTINA ROSE 2:39

So what would you say to someone that’s like, kind of stuck in that all-or-nothing mentality? Like, they have the sugar, they eat it? And then next thing, every decision after that is like all downhill. Because to be honest with you, I can be that way. it’s like, oh, well, I already gave up on that. So I’m just gonna like once the Pringles pop, they just don’t stop, So what? Data someone struggling with that? What can they do today?

CASEY WEISS 3:05

Well, two things, because I was gonna say one thing, but then you said pregnant like the don’t stop. So what’s so interesting is, first of all, with everything that I do with my clients, I use principles of intuitive eating, but I am not specifically just an intuitive eating nutritionist because I don’t feel like that is enough for most women to achieve the health that they want to achieve. We want to understand our connection with mindset with food, we want to break free of this diet mentality, but also understand nutrition because at the end of the day, some people will say like, okay, just if you have all the foods in your house, they didn’t lose the temptation. But like you said, food is manufactured to create its bliss point, this magical combination of sugar, fat, and salt with come with additives there are chemists in labs that are creating this food so that you will want to stop eating it. So stop thinking you’re a failure. Literally.

CRISTINA ROSE 3:58

There’s thousands of chemicals that make it addictive.

CASEY WEISS 4:00

Yeah and so it’s really important that you understand your words matter. So when you’re saying like I’m not in control, like no let’s reframe it and say these are foods that are hard for me to keep around but that’s because they are chemically made up for me to have be hard for me to eat in moderation. It’s not that I have no control it’s that these foods are not created to be eaten in leisure.

CRISTINA ROSE 4:29

Yeah, they’re supposed to be like stuffing your face like you’re eating like addictive of 100% and you know what sometimes we just need that reminder what you said like this is chemically made for me to be addictive and really enjoy it and get that like dopamine rush in my brain.

CASEY WEISS 4:30

Also I was actually just making a piece of content but it was talking about how weekend so often on weekends we are like ah The whatever. And by the time that we can begin to own nothing thinking, remind yourself, weekend’s are 30% of your week. And it’s not like you have to be perfect, but it’s about consistency.

CRISTINA ROSE 5:10

What we talked about, like the consistency, how often are you actually staying consistent with your diet? and with that, before we dive into the questions, I really want to get your take on like wellness trends that you see online that you would like to debunk.

CASEY WEISS 5:25

Yeah, so if it has a name, probably run back away. So one thing that I get asked, I would say the most about is intermittent fasting. And so intermittent fasting is so trendy right now. And there, fasting has been around for years, fasting has been a cultural, religious component for many, many years. It’s now just taken on a different name, I will say there is absolutely benefit to having an extended period of not eating, and that’s called not eating at night, when you’re sleeping.

CRISTINA ROSE 5:58

What’s the time we should stop?

CASEY WEISS 6:01

This is love. So I really want people to have a 12-hour break between dinner and breakfast. So if you stop eating at seven at night, and you eat tomorrow, very natural, that 12 hours is going to help to promote autophagy which is cellular cleaning, which is great for like even like things like cancer prevention, which is amazing. It’s also going to help with a general cellular cleaning going to help with digestion. There’s many benefits. But if you want to have a longer fast, I say we have an earlier dinner, instead of waiting too late in the morning, I want you to be having breakfast within an hour of waking up, especially also these intermittent fasting studies have been done on rats, mice and men. We’ve not been done on women who have vastly different hormonal cycles. So yeah, that’s what I definitely want to clear the air on.

CRISTINA ROSE 6:57

No, I love that. I have four questions I ask all my guests. And I would love to know what your answers are. And my first one is who and what inspires you?

CASEY WEISS 7:10

Who and What inspires me? Honestly, thinking of the past version of myself, maybe that sounds silly. But for so many years, I struggled with food and with my body. And every time that I’m able to help another woman every time I’d be able to help myself. I think about how far I have come. And I used to truly live in fear with food, food constantly absorbed every thought in my brain. And I don’t regret because I learned so much. And I think I know because of that struggle is what led me to choose this career path and led me to help women around the world and do what I do. But I’m living out like the dream life that that past version of myself just wish she had she wish she could feel normal with food. She wished that she would live a life where food didn’t consume her every thought where she was really happy with her body when she woke up in the mirror. And so that inspires me daily.

CRISTINA ROSE 8:08

No, I love that answer. Great answer. And then my second question is What is something you wish you knew when you were younger?

CASEY WEISS 8:15

Ooh. So something I wish I knew when I was younger was that it’s more than calories in versus calories out. So I am not going to lie to you like caloric intake does better. But we don’t have to count calories in order to be successful. I don’t have any my count my calories. I don’t have any my client’s calories or macros. When we focus on food quality, food diversity, and overall understanding how to build our plates, meals, snacks. We don’t have to be so concentrated on calories in order to see success.

CRISTINA ROSE 8:47

Yeah. And then my third question is, what’s the essential part of your daily routine?

CASEY WEISS 8:53

Ooh, my morning routine is really, really critical for me. I am actually 37 weeks pregnant.

CRISTINA ROSE 9:01

Oh Congratulations

CASEY WEISS 9:02

Thank you, with my first. So I know that my morning routine is going to change. But the point the thing that is I want everyone to focus on is how can you get some mindfulness movement and sunshine in the morning. So for me, I do meditation and I do journaling. And then I like to get outside. and I also nourishment. So I would say that that’s another part too and getting making sure I eat but one thing for me is it’s not going to be no things are going to change. Obviously, having a newborn, I’m not going to necessarily have my uninterrupted 10 or 20 minutes of meditation in the morning. But I work with women who have children and moms of multiples. And what’s really important is for all of them to find some way that during the day they can get some type of mindfulness and some type of centering back to themselves. One thing that people really overlook is getting that morning sunlight and even if it’s gray out getting outside in some way It is so helpful for your cortisol levels for overall your circadian rhythm to help you sleep at night, the best way to get you a good night’s sleep is to actually get sun exposure in the morning. So I’m making I do live in California. I live in Northern California, though. So it’s a little we get a little more weather than Southern California. But I am from Connecticut. So I am used to all and I went to school in the Midwest, so I’m used to all types of weather. And it is crucial that we can get outdoor exposure when possible.

CRISTINA ROSE 10:29

Perfect Yeah, no, I think that is critical. I walk every morning with my children to school

CASEY WEISS 10:35
Love that

CRISTINA ROSE 10:34

And a difference like in my mood, and I think even in my kids moods, they really like to walk. And then my last question is best advice you’ve ever received?

CASEY WEISS 10:42

The best advice I ever received, is if they aren’t leading the life, like you want to leave, and you don’t need to take advice from them. Perfect. I know, it was definitely said more eloquently. But I think very often, especially in my younger years, I thought that like I should absorb as a sponge, everyone and everyone’s opinions and thoughts and advice. And you can still listen and be kind and say and nod your head. But if they don’t lead li the life you want to lead, then maybe it’s not the best idea to take advice from them, at least in that category.

CRISTINA ROSE 11:18

Yeah. Perfect. Well, Casey, before we go, do you have any last words you would like to tell the audience?

CASEY WEISS 11:25

Yeah So I just want to remind you that just because other people have certain goals with their health, their wellness their body, that doesn’t have to be your goals. It’s important that you focus on how do you want to feel. And so how you want to feel can incorporate aesthetic goals. But first focus on like, I want, when you wake up, what is that version of you that you want feel. So if you want to feel energized, if you want to feel competent, back and of course include, as I said, aesthetic goals, but it’s not just that and so being clear and honest with yourself with that is really important, and I think is the best way for us to get clarity on what we really want to achieve.

CRISTINA ROSE 12:04
