If you’re looking for a great book to help guide you into having a beautifully functioning home with style I suggest getting your hands on Beautifully Organized; A Guide to Function and Style in your Home by Nikki Boyd. Her book is easy to read and has so many amazing tips and tricks. Not to mention the beautiful pictures of her stunning home. This book also makes for a great coffee table book for your guest or yourself to skim through.

Here are 5 key steps I took away from Boyd’s book on how to tackle clutter and get organized in any space of your home.

Step 1: Assess

This is the first step before doing your deep dive into organizing your space. You will want to ask yourself a few questions like these: What is the purpose of this space? Do my family and I have any needs that may be served by using this area differently? How can I make this space more functional?

Step 2: Declutter

This is where we can get stuck in our reorganization projects is the daunting task of decluttering. However, once it gets going it feels so good to throw out things that have been taking up space. You can also get that feeling of accomplishment and achievement once you’re finished and I’m always down for a good excuse to give myself a pat on the back. There are many different reasons on why we create clutter in our homes. For example we have sentimental syndrome, “I may need it later” syndrome, learned behavior, or shopping habits. Whichever the reason is, once you discover it, you can unlock letting go of things that can be thrown-out.

Make decluttering fun by listening to a great podcast or music that makes you feel happy. Set time limits and take breaks. Create three piles using bins or bags; purge, keep, and donate. This is the start of your decluttering process and will help you keep the clutter organized and not look and feel too chaotic.

Step 3: Clean

I feel like this step is self explanatory but there are always little dust balls and hidden dirt gems that come out of hiding. Grab your favorite cleaning products such as glass and all purpose cleaner, gloves, and microfiber cloths, and toothbrushes which are great for cleaning around faucets, switches, and those hard to reach spaces. Run the vacuum and mop the floors.

Step 4: Organize

Your ultimate goal is to have a sensible place for everything that belongs in the space. Here are some tips and things to consider when organizing:

  • Labeling, color coding, and visuals are organizational methods that can be used
  • Are we making the best use of space right now?
  • How can I maximize the space?
